Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy
2011 Annual Conference

Dates: May 25-28, 2011
Location: The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii
Theme: "Sustainability and Interdependence"
Deadline for abstracts and proposals:EXTENDED to Jan. 15, 2011
Register for this conference

Co-sponsored by the Philosophy Department of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the 2011 Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy annual conference will be held at the beautiful UH campus from May 25-28, 2011.

NEW: Download the conference program as a PDF.

A special feature about the 2011 SACP conference is that it will be held in conjunction with the Tenth East-West Philosophers' Conference, which will be convened May 16 - 24, 2011, also at the UH campus. The SACP conference theme "Sustainability and Interdependence" and the EWP conference theme "Value and Values: Economics and Justice in an Age of Global Interdependence" are clearly related (see the EWP Conference call for papers). The SACP conference will allow participants to continue the conversation from the EWP, but in a way that dives deeper into Asian philosophical contexts and broadens the scope for discussing sustainability to go beyond economics. Participants of either conference are strongly encouraged to take the opportunity to join the other conference.

Abstracts for presentations and panel proposals for the 2011 SACP conference should be sent electronically to BOTH Douglas Berger at dberger@siu.edu and Michael Barnhart at mbarnhart@kingsborough.edu, and cc to Peimin Ni at nip@gvsu.edu. Abstracts for presentations should be between 200-300 words, including a title. Panel proposals should include the title and a brief description of the panel, names and affiliation of panelists, and titles of each presentation. The deadline for submission is Jan. 15, 2011. Notice of acceptance of proposals will be sent to your e-mail address in late January or early February. In order to minimize the complexity of dealing with late cancellations, registration for the conference is expected within 2 weeks after the acceptance notice is received.

To encourage student participation, SACP has set up again a Student Essay Contest. Awards for the 2011 conference Student Essay Contest are: First prize: $1,000; Second prize, $750; and Third Prize, $500. The awards will be applied to the travel and accommodation expenses for attending the 2011 SACP conference only. Students should submit an essay of no more than 10 pages (or 4,000 words) and a 300 word abstract to both Douglas Berger and Michael Barnhart, and cc to Peimin Ni (addresses above), by Jan. 15, 2011.

UPDATE: The winners of the student essay prizes have been announced! See the member news page for details.

Registration for the conference is now open. Please click here to register; payment may be made by PayPal or mailed check.
