We are pleased to introduce the Second Annual Confucian Studies Summer Institute at the Nishan Birthplace of the Sage Academy in Shandong, China, June 6 to July 3, 2012.
This month-long training program for teachers of Chinese culture (and select graduate students) will be led by professors Roger T. Ames (University of Hawaii), Sor-hoon Tan (National University of Singapore) and Tian Chenshan (Beijing Foreign Studies University), with a special series of lectures by Henry Rosemont, Jr. (Brown University). Our time together will revolve around careful and critical readings of classical texts and contemporary commentaries, seminars, discussion groups, cultural events and activities, and a number of field trips.

The 2011 SACP Conference Program Committee has completed its review of all the entries for this year’s student essay contest, and is happy to congratulate the following winners:
First Prize: Jake Davis, City University of New York, “‘When You Know for Yourselves’: The Establishment of Mindfulness (Satipaṭṭhāna) as a Means of Moral Discovery”
Second Prize: Laura Guerrero, University of New Mexico, “Why a Mādhyamika Cannot Be a Skeptic”
Third Prize: Ryan Melvin, Birmingham-Southern College, “Minimalism and Consciousness in Zhuangzi’s Cook Ding”
Doug Allen, who served as President of the SACP, 2001-2004, edited The Philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi for the 21st Century (Lexington Books, 2008, and Oxford University Press Delhi, 2009).
Five of the 12 contributors to the book have been active in the SACP.
