Dynamic Encounters between Buddhism and the West

University of Cambridge Postgraduate Online Conference 21-22 June 2021

This conference seeks to explore historical and contemporary dialogues between Buddhism and the West, while also contemplating ways of opening up new conversations. With an appreciation of the value of interdisciplinarity, we aim to bring together scholars from diverse fields to both share and enhance their unique perspectives. In today’s era of globalisation, dialogue between different cultures is a daily occurrence. The last century in particular has produced a dynamic exchange of ideas between Buddhism and the West. Important exchanges have occurred in myriad areas of intellectual life, ranging from spiritual endeavours to the pursuit of a scientific understanding of the mind. In Western universities, Buddhist Studies is a growing field, and thus there is a continuous interaction of scholars. In addition, outside of academia, interest in Buddhism as a religion and practice has been steadily growing, along with the number of Buddhist institutions.

In the context of globalisation, the encounter between Buddhism and the West is generally understood as a modern phenomenon. However, throughout history, from distant antiquity to recent past, the dialogue between Buddhism and the West has been pervasive and dynamic. This conference intends to uncover some of these exchanges and suggest possibilities for future dialogues.

Possible topics for papers can include, but are not limited to:

  • views of Western intellectuals on Buddhism and of Buddhist intellectuals on the West over the course of history;
  • similarities and differences between modern approaches to Buddhism and those of the past;
  • mutual influence in philosophy;
  • artistic expressions: genres, techniques and topics;
  • Christianity and Buddhism;
  • dynamic encounters in films;
  • interculturality in literature;
  • issues of comparative jurisprudence between Buddhist legal codes and Western doctrines.

This conference is aimed at postgraduate students. Since Buddhism is an umbrella term that picks out and is associated with a plurality of religious beliefs, politics, philosophical positions, arguments, practices, and artistic works, this conference is very broad in scope, with possible contributions ranging from philosophy, film studies to law, this leaves the conference open to a wide range of students to make a contribution from their own research field.

We welcome scholars to submit proposals for either complete panels or individual papers.

Guidelines for paper/abstract submission:

For individual papers, please submit a 250 word abstract, with or without a completed paper attached.  If only an abstract is submitted, a complete version of the paper is required at least 30 days before the meeting to provide the session chair and panelists with enough time to prepare for their session.  Completed papers should be written in English and not exceed 4000 words.  The presentation time for each paper will be approximately 20-25 minutes (this is about 10-12 pages of TNR 12pt double-spaced text, FYI). For panel proposals, please submit a panel proposal (250 words) explaining how the papers of the panel fit together, and individual paper abstracts (250 words). Panel proposals may also include suggestions for a panel chair, although this is not required. Please include your full name, academic affiliation, and email in your proposal.

Please let us know if you are simultaneously submitting a separate proposal to other Asian philosophy groups for the same APA meeting.

Membership of the SACP is not required for consideration or acceptance, but we ask that you be a current SACP member by the time we submit the session information to the APA.

A note from APA regarding Meeting 2021:

Note: Currently, all three APA divisions are planning to hold in-person meetings in 2021. At the same time, we are also considering alternative formats, such as virtual meetings, as contingencies in the case that our usual meeting format becomes impossible. Though external forces like the ongoing pandemic affect and inform our plans, your participation is the most critical input for planning any meeting. If you are considering submitting a session request, we encourage you to do so.

Call for Special Issues: Ethics in Asian Philosophical Traditions

Ethical Theory and Moral Practice invites proposals for a special issue on topics interfacing contemporary ethics and Asian philosophies/comparative philosophy involving Asian traditions.

This dedicated issue forms part of the journal’s ongoing efforts to expand the repertoire of traditions, ideas and approaches typically considered in mainstream ethical philosophy, and to foster dialogue and engagement across cultures and methodologies. More specifically, we aim to:

  • introduce important ethical topics in Asian and comparative traditions to mainstream philosophical audiences in a way that is clear and accessible, and enable dialogue among scholars working on similar issues in different traditions,
  • advance inquiry into the foundations and methodology of the study of ethics through engagements with traditions in which philosophizing takes significantly different forms,
  • produce new conceptual resources for doing philosophy,
  • identify promising topics and new lines of inquiry that might meaningfully be brought into contemporary philosophical debates.

The topical range and format remain open, but the special issue should be in line with the general concerns and orientations of the journal and seek to make the content accessible to its general readership. In particular, please note that given the journal’s profile we cannot consider submissions which are exclusively of a historical or exegetical character. Some possible approaches include:

  • a focus on a specific theme that is significant in both a particular Asian tradition/set of traditions and in current philosophical discussion, and that meaningfully engages both,
  • collaborations involving scholars with expertise in a particular Asian tradition/set of traditions and in contemporary ethics,
  • explorations of methodological issues and problems involved in the cross-cultural of ethics.

Deadline for the first round of applications: October 1, 2020

Guidelines

Special Issues are a collection of 6-9 original papers, accompanied by an introduction usually written by the guest editors. Proposals have a maximum word count of 2.000 words and provide information about

  • the guest editor(s)
  • the topic and rationale of the collection envisaged
  • the authors
  • the planned contributions (via short abstracts)

They should also include an explanation of the importance of the topic and the selection of authors and themes.

Please send proposals to the Editors-in-Chief Marcus Düwell (m.duwell@uu.nl) and Thomas Schramme (t.schramme@liverpool.ac.uk).
